Quercetin is the most researched flavonoid molecule and, in activity studies, it is the flavonoid with the greatest potential for therapeutic use.

Quercetin is a strong antioxidant, with many functions attributed to its antioxidant activity. For example, quercetin has been shown to inhibit oxidation of LDL cholesterol, and to spare vitamin E and glutathione.

Quercetin down regulates inflammatory processes by inhibiting the enzymes cyclo-oxygenase and lipoxygenase. In addition, quercetin blocks histamine synthesis and release by mast cells and basophils.

Cataract formation is partially due to the conversion of glucose to sorbitol, which is catalyzed by aldose reductase. Quercetin inhibits aldose reductase.

Quercetin supports the body’s immune response to many viruses, including herpes simplex, poliovirus, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus and HIV.

Quercetin exerts anti-proliferative effects on many cancer cell types including: breast, leukemia, colon, ovary, squamous cell, endometrial, gastric and non-small-cell lung.
