Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin” or “rickets-preventive factor”. In 1918, a British nutritionist working with cod liver oil and butterfat in the diet presented the first evidence of this fat soluble vitamin and its anti-rachitic properties. A few years later, studies demonstrated that the action of ultraviolet light on the skin also produced a factor with anti-rachitic activity. By the 1930’s Vitamin D, Vitamin D-2 and Vitamin D-3 were specifically isolated and identified.
In order to help with deciding the optimal levels of vitamin D, we can look at primates and humans that are exposed to high levels of sunlight. Primates, including chimpanzees, baboons and gorillas have blood levels that average between 50-70 ng/ml. Likewise, surfers and outdoor construction workers average between 50-70 ng/ml. Today, most Americans do not get sufficient sun exposure, and, combined with the use of sun block, suffer from inadequate vitamin D synthesis: the average American exhibits 20-30 ng/ml.

Functions

• The importance of vitamin D for bone health has been previously acknowledged; Vitamin D levels need to be at ideal levels for optimal bone calcification. • It has been shown that people who have serum levels below 30 ng/ml had an increase in cancer risk of 30-50%. A number of different cancers including breast, prostate, skin and colon cancer have been linked to lower levels of vitamin D. • It has already been established that people born above the 49th parallel have a 50% increase in MS. Now it has been shown that other autoimmune diseases such as type one diabetes are also related to low vitamin D levels. • Mood disorders are now thought to be related to suboptimal levels of vitamin D. • Recent publications have shown that vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, beyond other established CV risk factors. A higher risk is particularly evident among individuals with high blood pressure. • Lower levels of vitamin D have been linked to decreased immunity.
